We will visit the Baptistery where we can admire its pre-Renaissance gold mosaics and speak about the ancient history of the building and the piazza around. Then we will visit the beautiful museum of Opera del Duomo, renovated in 2015, where we can see the original gates of the Baptistery, which reveal fascinating stories of New and the Old Testament. We will admire Michelangelo’s Pietà, that the great artist started as a sculpture to decorate his own tomb and which he tried to destroy one evening…
We will go back to time to see when and how the construction of one of the largest cathedrals in the world started. The mystery of the enormous dome remained unrevealed over the centuries, but we will try to understand how Brunelleschi succeeded in its constructing. The beautiful cantorie (choir galleries) by Donatello and Luca della Robbia now are placed in the museum, but where they stood before and why they were removed? Join me to find the answers of all these questions!
